McKenzie Treatment
The
McKenzie (MDT) Method is an approach to treating spinal and other
orthopedic conditions that cause pain or limit function. The central
focus of the evaluation is a sequence of test movements that are used to
determine which exercises and therapeutic movements will resolve the
patient’s problem.
Treatment is focused on educating patients in using exercises, posture
modification, and other self treatment techniques to restore pain free
movement and reduce the chance of future problems. Traditional Physical
Therapy procedures including manual therapy are used as needed to
enhance the self treatment process. For more information regarding this
approach refer to

Spinal pain and
injury affect over 80% of the population at some time during their
lives. The Physical Therapists at Physical Therapy Associates of
Schenectady, P.C. are able to provide these patients with appropriate
education and care to improve recovery from the acute stages to return
to normal activities. Our thorough evaluation and treatment procedures
help determine what type of program is suitable for each individual.
Each patient is progressed through an appropriate continuum of care
based on their individual needs, normal activity level and work
responsibilities.
Our Spine
Care Programs include the following:
- First
Aid/Acute Injury Care - An evaluation is performed to determine
appropriate first aid and treatment immediately or within the first
few weeks after injury or surgery. Modalities such as heat, cold,
and electrical stimulation may be used to improve tolerance to
treatment and normal movement.
- Spine Clinic - Following a
comprehensive evaluation of spinal mechanics, patients with symptoms
or injuries from the neck to the pelvis actively participate in a
progressive exercise program and receive modalities, manipulation,
and other treatment as necessary to help them resume normal
activity.
- Education Programs - Our Spine
Care Programs, Post Op Back Surgery and Back Pain During Pregnancy
education programs instruct patients in ways to reduce strain on
their spines to aid in recovery, prevent reoccurrence and improve
the benefits of the rehabilitation process.
- Aquatic Therapy - Physical
Therapy and exercise in water allows us to take advantage of water's
natural buoyancy and resistance. The acute patient is able to move
with increased ease with less weight bearing to regain motion and
flexibility sooner.
- Functional Capacity Evaluation -
A 3-4 hour comprehensive evaluation will identify the recovering
person's current physical abilities to perform the essential tasks
of a job. This will help the physician determine a safe,
appropriate return to work date or further rehabilitation.
- Return to Work Programs - This
program is designed to maximize an individual's functional and work
related abilities following spinal injury to facilitate an early and
safe return back to productive employment.
- Job Analysis and Workplace
Modifications - Assessment and recommendations are made for
prevention of further spinal strain and injury on the job.
